Use the current Government of Canada tools to confirm your status, coverage start date, and programme information before receiving care. Do not rely on an old letter, an application alone, or a clinic webpage to confirm eligibility.

Call the clinic before requesting care. The team will confirm current participation, new-patient capacity, the available billing workflow, and any clinic-specific charges.

After current participation is confirmed, ask which appointment types are available, what programme information the clinic needs, whether a service may require preauthorization, what can be submitted to the programme, and what amount you may need to pay.

Expected patient amount

Ask about any expected co-payment, difference between the clinic fee and the CDCP-established fee, non-covered service, or other charge before care proceeds.

Preauthorization status

Some services require programme approval before the CDCP will consider payment. Ask whether preauthorization applies and whether a decision has been received before starting that service.

Coverage and cost

Coverage depends on current programme rules.

The Government of Canada states that the CDCP may help pay a portion of the cost for a range of oral health services. Coverage depends on the service, programme criteria, frequency limits, preauthorization where required, and the member’s active coverage. A clinical recommendation does not guarantee that the programme will pay for it.

Review What the CDCP Covers

Co-payments and additional charges

You may still need to pay part of the cost.

Canada.ca explains that a CDCP member may have a co-payment or additional charges. An additional charge may arise when the clinic fee is higher than the amount the CDCP reimburses or when you agree to care the programme does not cover. Ask what the programme is expected to pay and what amount you may need to pay directly before treatment proceeds.

Do not assume that active coverage means every service is covered or that the programme pays the full clinic fee.

Programme approval

Some services require preauthorization.

Preauthorization is a programme process used to decide whether the CDCP will consider coverage for a service before it begins. It is not the same as deciding which treatment is clinically appropriate. Not every request is approved. The programme may require supporting records and applies its current criteria, guidelines, and limits.

Ask the clinic whether preauthorization applies, whether the required information has been submitted, and whether a decision has been received. Do not begin a service on the assumption that a pending request will be approved.

The service does not need programme approval before it begins. Ask the clinic to confirm this rather than assuming it.

Submitted

The request and any supporting records have been sent to the programme. A submitted request is not a decision, and not every request is approved.

Decision received

The programme has responded with its determination for that service. Ask what the response covers before the service starts.

Before you contact the clinic

Have your current coverage information available.

Tell the clinic that you intend to use the Canada Dental Care Plan. Have the current information from your CDCP letter, member card, or online account available so the clinic can tell you what it needs to verify coverage. Canada.ca advises members to confirm that coverage is active before treatment.
