Reasons to call
Call about these problems.
Symptoms can have more than one cause. Call the clinic and describe what happened, when it started, and whether the symptoms are changing.
Tooth pain that is new, increasing, or interfering with normal activity.
Swelling in the gums, face, mouth, tongue, or throat.
A broken, cracked, loose, or knocked-out tooth.
A filling, crown, bridge, or other restoration that has come loose or fallen out.
Bleeding after an injury or dental procedure.
A dental injury involving the teeth, gums, lips, tongue, or jaw.

First actions
What to do right now.
These steps do not replace an examination. Call the clinic or another dental provider promptly. If symptoms feel life-threatening, call 911.
A knocked-out adult tooth
Act quickly. If the tooth looks clean and it is safe to do so, the Canadian Dental Association advises placing it back in its socket. If that is not possible, place it in a container of cold milk and go to a dentist right away. Do not delay while waiting for an online response.
A broken or chipped tooth
Call and explain what happened. A dentist needs to examine the tooth to determine the extent of the break and the available options. Do not assume that a small visible break means there is no deeper damage.
A lost filling or crown
Call for advice and an assessment. For a lost filling, the Canadian Dental Association describes softened sugarless chewing gum as a short-term cover for the space. A dentist needs to examine a lost crown and the affected tooth before recommending the next step.
Pain or swelling
Call the clinic and explain where the pain or swelling is located and whether it is changing. The Canadian Dental Association advises using a cold pack on the outside of the face for toothache and avoiding heat on the jaw. If swelling affects breathing or swallowing, call 911.
Bleeding after an injury
Apply steady pressure with a clean cloth or gauze. If the bleeding does not stop, go to a hospital emergency department.
